Equality and Diversity

Promoting Equality and Diversity at Our School

At our school, we celebrate the fact that "We’re all Different and all important". Our community is built on mutual respect, and we are committed to ensuring that every individual feels safe, valued, and protected.

A central part of our ethos is understanding the Equality Act 2010, which makes it illegal to discriminate against or harass anyone based on specific "protected characteristics". We integrate these values into our daily school life through Collective Worship, assemblies, and our curriculum—including PSHE, RSE, and the diverse literature we explore in the classroom.

Equality and Diversity in Action at Denby Free

Equality of opportunity is at the heart of our values as a school. We are against all forms of discrimination – whether that be on grounds of race, religion, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability or age. We oppose all forms of intolerance towards any group, however manifested. We have zero tolerance of any form of discrimination or prejudice.

We are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity for all pupils, staff, parents and carers irrespective of race, gender, disability, belief, sexual orientation, age or socio-economic background. We aim to develop a culture of inclusion and diversity in which all those connected to the school feel proud of their identity and ability to participate fully in school life.

We tackle discrimination through the positive promotion of equality, by challenging bullying and stereotypes and by creating an environment which champions respect for all.

At Denby Free CofE VA Primary School, we believe that diversity is a strength which should be respected and celebrated by all those who learn, teach and visit us.

Equality in Teaching and learning

We provide all our pupils with the opportunity to succeed and to reach the highest level of personal achievement. We do this by:

  • Ensuring equality of access for all pupils and preparing them for life in a diverse society
  • Using materials that reflect the diversity of the school, population and local community without stereotyping
  • Promoting attitudes and values that challenge any discriminatory behaviour or prejudice
  • Providing opportunities for pupils to appreciate their own culture and celebrate the diversity of other cultures
  • Seeking to involve all parents in supporting their child’s education
  • Utilising teaching approaches appropriate for the whole school population which are inclusive and reflective of our pupils.

Equality in Admissions and Exclusions

Our admissions arrangements are fair and transparent and do not discriminate on the grounds of race, gender, religion, belief, disability and/or socio-economic background.

Equal Opportunities for Staff

All staff appointments and promotions are made on the basis of merit and ability and in compliance with the law. We are keen to ensure that the staffing of the school reflects the diversity of our community.

The school has a full and separate Equality Policy. Please consult this for further details if you wish.

Understanding Protected Characteristics

We teach our pupils about the various ways people are protected under the law to ensure fairness for everyone:

  • Age: No one should be treated less favourably because of their age or age range without a justifiable reason.
  • Disability: Protection extends to those with disabilities, including long-term illnesses that impact daily activities. We are committed to making reasonable adjustments to remove disadvantages for disabled members of our community.
  • Race: We protect and celebrate all races, which includes an individual's colour, nationality, ethnicity, or national origins.
  • Religion or Belief: Discrimination is prohibited based on a person's religion, their beliefs, or a lack of religion or belief.
  • Sex and Sexual Orientation: We ensure that no one is treated less favourably because they are male or female. Similarly, everyone is protected regardless of their sexual orientation.
  • Gender Reassignment: We support and protect those who are transitioning or intend to transition from their sex assigned at birth.
  • Pregnancy and Maternity: The law protects women from discrimination due to pregnancy, pregnancy-related illness, or being a new mother.
  • Marriage and Civil Partnership: Discrimination is prohibited based on whether someone is married or in a civil partnership, regardless of the sex of their partner.

How We Teach These Values

Our commitment to equality isn't just a policy; it is woven into the fabric of our learning through our Christian values:

  • Collective Worship: We use these moments of reflection to discuss themes of kindness, inclusion, and the importance of standing up against discrimination.
  • PSHE and RSE: Our curriculum provides age-appropriate lessons on identity, healthy relationships, and the legal protections afforded to every citizen.
  • The Wider Curriculum: We carefully select books and resources that reflect a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, helping our pupils develop empathy and a global perspective.

By fostering an environment where these characteristics are understood and respected, we prepare our pupils to be compassionate and responsible members of a diverse society.
