Climate Actions and Sustainability at Denby Free

Climate and Sustainability at Denby Free

Denby Free is committed to nurturing the next generation and preparing them for a future impacted by climate change. We recognise the vital role that education plays in tackling the environmental challenges we face and creating a better, greener world for all.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

In line with the Department for Education's (DfE) Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy, we are taking active steps to reduce our environmental footprint and inspire our pupils to become agents of positive change. Our staff and governors are working diligently to implement sustainable practises across our school, from energy-efficient upgrades to promoting biodiversity on our grounds.

Empowering our School Community

We believe that educating and empowering our pupils is key to driving meaningful change. Through our School Council, we provide opportunities for children to voice their ideas and concerns about environmental issues. In our Collective Worship sessions, we also explore themes of sustainability, stewardship, and our responsibility to care for God's creation.

Curriculum and Learning Opportunities

Across our curriculum, we integrate lessons and activities that deepen our pupils' understanding of climate change, renewable energy, and sustainable living. In science, geography, and citizenship lessons, children learn about the causes and effects of global warming, as well as practical steps they can take to reduce their carbon footprint.

Beyond the classroom, we offer hands-on learning experiences that allow our pupils to engage directly with sustainability initiatives. From tending to our school garden and orchard to participating in community litter-picking events, our children gain a tangible understanding of their role in creating a more sustainable future.

Building Resilience and Adapting to Change

As we look to the future, we are also focused on ensuring that our school is resilient and adaptable to the effects of climate change. We are working closely with local authorities and experts to assess the potential risks and implement measures to protect our buildings, grounds, and community.

Inspiring Change, Nurturing Hope

We are committed to inspiring positive change and nurturing hope in our pupils. By equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and practical experiences to tackle environmental challenges, we aim to empower the next generation to be agents of transformation, both within our school and in the wider world.
