DENBY NEWS

Staff / Governor News

For those of you who hadn’t heard, Mrs Nicky Phillips gave birth to a bouncing baby girl at the end of October 2009.  She has been named Ella Mae – Mum, Dad and baby are doing fine!

Mr Paul Slaney has duly been elected as the new Parent Governor for Denby Free Aided Primary School as his was the only nomination received.  His term of office will run for four years until 19 November 2013.  There will be another Parent Governor vacancy in school as from 5 December 2009, if any parent would be interested in filling this vacancy please contact me as soon as possible.

Charity Collection and Donations

Jeans for Genes – we held this event in early October and banked a total of £186.00, this included the sale of ‘Fifi’ pin badges and donations in the bucket.

Wear Your Own Clothes – we had a non-uniform day at the end of October, with donations in the bucket, which will help towards our activities during Golden Time eg craft materials, gardening equipment, ingredients for cooking etc.  A Total of £92.89 was collected, many thanks for your donations.

Anti-Bullying Week

Thank you for your support during our activities last week.  The children all received a cyber-bug and pencil as a memento of the week.  The “Wear Blue” day was enjoyed by everyone and donations in the bucket totalled £72.00, many thanks for your support.

To coincide with Anti-Bullying week we recently ran an E-Safety information evening for parents of which eight families were represented (10.2% of families in school).  This concentrated on cyber-bullies and internet safety and was very informative.

Indoor Athletics

As reported in the previous newsletter a team of Y5 / 6 children took part in the initial indoor athletics small schools competition and made it to the final where they won!  The team will now represent Amber Valley at the County Finals to be held at Moorways Sports Centre in March 2010.  In the Spring Term the School Sports Partnership will organise some extra training as the children will be competing in new events – well done Team Denby Free!

Healthy Living

The School Council is concentrating on a healthy lifestyle in and out of school and have reported to staff that unsuitable snacks are being brought into school eg biscuits,

chocolate.  Can we please remind you that only healthy snacks are allowed.  KS1 children still have fruit provided therefore there is no need for them to bring other options into school.  KS2 children can bring in any fruit or healthy cereal bars.

The School Council are looking into developing and introducing a “Fruit Tuck Shop” into school for the morning break.  We will keep parents informed of developments.

The Mid-day Meals supervisors have also said that chocolate and sweets are appearing more regularly in lunch boxes.  We would encourage parents to back our Healthy Eating campaign in school and put healthy options in their packed lunches to help make a balanced diet.  Thank you for your support.

Safeguarding

We are currently reviewing all our safeguarding policies and procedures in order to keep our school as safe as possible.

All staff have undergone First Aid training and more recently up-to-date safeguarding training as well of being made aware of e-safety and cyber bullying.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that access to the school for adults should only be through the main entrance into the main reception area.  If you need to come into school please report there in the first instance so that we know exactly who is on site.  This practice also leaves the bottom entrance clear for the children as the cloakroom area can be really busy at the start of school.

Clothing and School Uniform

Please ensure your child has suitable clothing at school for the current weather conditions – a waterproof coat and sensible shoes are essential – as each class spends time outside during the day, even if only for a few minutes fresh air.
