Eagles HOME LEarNINg

Happy New Year lovely Eagles!
Firstly, we would like to say a huge thank you for all the lovely presents, cards and messages we received from many of you at Christmas. We have written 'thank you' cards for you but these can obviously not be given out now until we are back in school.

Starting the new year in lockdown was not what any of us would have wanted but, as you will have heard on the news, it is very important that we all follow the government advice at present in order to stay safe and well.

Below we have posted your home learning activities for today. We will post the next two days (Thursday and Friday) later today.  From next week we will aim to have the full week's activities up by Sunday evening so you can get organised. Please bear with us though as, during this lockdown, we will be in school teaching Key Worker classes during the day but we will do our best to keep up! At some point, we are hoping to move home learning onto our new Learning Platform but we will let you know how to access that when the time comes.
In addition to the activities below, please do try to keep up with your daily practice of reading for at least 20 minutes a day and going on Spelling Shed for 10 minutes. If any of you do not have enough books to read at home, we can recommend this website where you can register free and download a great range of fiction and nonfiction books to read:

Parents: We really do appreciate (from our own experience!) how challenging home schooling is, especially if you are working from home yourselves. If your child has difficulty accessing home learning electronically, please let us know and we will do whatever we can to help. We have designed the activities in a way that a Year 6 child should be able to work through them independently with minimal support. We will check our emails on eagleshomelearning@denbyfree.org.uk regularly during the day - if they are stuck, encourage them to email us and we will get back to them as soon as we can. If you just need some extra support motivating your children to engage with the activities, again let us know and we can arrange a time to speak to them and offer encouragement. We really are all in this together and we all have your child's interests at heart so we will do whatever we can, whenever we can, to make the next few weeks as painless as possible for everyone!

Reading in Year 6 is very important. Being a fluent reader will really give the children an advantage as they prepare for their SATS in May. However, just as importantly, we aim to foster a real love of reading in all our children. The '100 books' list opposite is useful to gauge the level of text we would expect Y6 children to be reading. Of course, all children develop at different rates and we have a range of books in class to suit all reading abilities. Children should aim to read for at least 20 minutes a day and, whenever possible, should try to read to an adult (even just for 5 minutes) three times a week.
