We observed Armistice Day in school last Wednesday, the 11th November.
Throughout the week in class, we looked at the significance of remembrance and the different ways in which we pay tribute to the men and women who have lost their lives in conflict throughout history. This year, Eagles class were particularly interested to learn of the role of animals in wartime and this led on to us researching the significance of the different coloured poppies that are worn at this time of year. We joined the other KS2 classes in a service at the war memorial in St Mary's churchyard at 11am where the children observed two minutes silent reflection, listened to the Last Post and heard the names of the men from Denby Parish that lost their lives in WW1 read out. Tributes were laid on the memorial and a poem and prayers read to end our service. We were very proud of the children who showed great respect and compassion throughout the day.

Happy Harvest

10/7/2020

We were all sad not to be able to celebrate Harvest in the usual way this year but in Eagles class we still marked the occasion with reflection, gratitude and lots of fun!
As part of our celebrations this year, all the classes researched how Harvest is celebrated around the world and by different cultures and religions. In Eagles we chose to research the Hindu festival of colour known as Holi. The children learnt lots about the origins of the festival and the modern day celebrations that take place in different Hindu communities across the world including throwing paint at each other which sounded a lot of fun!

As part of our Christian Celebrations in Class, Year 6 did an investigation into how far our food travels before it gets to us and what this means in terms of environmental impact.
The children used pizza as an example and costed their favourite choice of pizza in airmiles. The results were both surprising and shocking!

After all that hard work it was time to celebrate with our own version of 'harvest breakfast' which we all enjoyed! We gave thanks for this year's harvest and looked forward to next year when we will hopefully all be able to celebrate together again! Well done Y6!

Welcome back to school Eagles Class!

The children have made a great start to the new school year and it really is already like they've never been away! We have spent the first two weeks getting back into the swing of things and learning the new routines and expectations that go with being at the top of KS2. We have done lots of reflection work, thinking about the impact that Covid 19 has had on us all and on our friends and families. We've also been building ourselves up to deal with all the challenges that the coming year might throw at us and we are more than ready to make a great start now.
Amongst other activities aimed at making us aware of our own wellbeing and how we need to nurture that, we have been doing lots of creative art work. Her are a few of the 'half and half' portraits we did last week. We think you'll agree they are FANTASTIC!
