Firstly, a HUGE well done to all of our Year Twos who have taken their phonics test this week. You have all tried incredibly hard with your phonics this term and we are so proud of you all!
Since coming back from our two weeks at home, we have decorated our classroom for Christmas, been celebrating advent in our classes, practising our nativity and taking part in lots of Christmas crafts and activities. We have been playing Christmas board games, enjoying Christmas maths and have even been writing letters to Santa!
The children have worked incredibly hard on their nativity performance and we cannot wait for you all to see it!

Firstly, we are going to miss seeing you all so much over the next two weeks but we hope that you enjoy your home learning.
We have had a fantastic week of learning and you have impressed us so much! In English we have been writing a non-chronological report about life in the trenches. Writing such a long piece in a non-fiction style can be quite tricky when we are used to writing traditional tales and fiction but you have all done an amazing job of using our Talk for Writing strategies to help you. Well done!
In maths we have been looking at recognising money, making amounts and giving change. Money is another topic that can be quite tricky but you have all done so well and have become really confident in using pounds and pence.
Our afternoons have started to be taken up by our 2020 nativity which we will have to put on pause during home learning but you all made a great start to learning your lines and the songs; I know it will be brilliant!

This week we have been learning about Remembrance Day and the war. We made a beautiful wreath of poppies and laid it in the church for remembrance. The children loved learning all about the war and the reasons why we have Remembrance Day and so we have decided to continue with this as part of our topic this half term. We have been reading some fabulous books by Hilary Robinson including 'Where the Poppies Grow' and 'Flo of the Somme'. We found it interesting to learn all about soldiers and animals during wartime (WW1 in particular) and life in the trenches. We will still be looking at our topic of food + some traditional tales but we will incorporate this into our wartime theme and will focus on traditional tales in December.
We have created fantastic contrasting poppy artwork, researched wartime heroes and have begun collecting facts ready to write our own wartime fact files next week.
In maths we have started our work on money. We have been recognising coins and notes and have begun to count amounts in pounds and pence. We will be continuing this next week.
In Discovery Time we have been enjoying spending time outside and having a go at construction challenges.

We have had a great week back after half term. We have not started our new topic yet as we have been looking at Bonfire Night this week. We have been writing descriptive shape and acrostic poems in English, practising our multiplication and place value skills in maths and have had a whole week of art afternoons.
We have created firework art in the style of 'blow paintings' and pastel line drawings and have learnt about firework safety.

This week we have looked at the book Tell Me a Dragon by Jackie Morris and have designed our own dragons. We have learnt about nouns (naming words) and adjectives (describing words) and have written our own dragon poems.
In maths we have been continuing our work on number bonds and addition and subtraction using tens and ones. Year One have been using bar models, part-whole diagrams and fact families and Year Two have been looking at missing number addition and subtractions, inverse operations and adding to 100 in tens and ones.
We have been getting very creative in the afternoons this week. We have drawn lotus flowers for a secret project, collaged feathers for a whole school art display and designed our annual Christmas cards! We have also been looking at the year 1066 and Edward the Confessor. We learnt about the three men that wanted to be king after Edward and why. We thought about what makes a good king and next week we will be looking at the Battle of Hastings and why and how the first castles were built.
Next week we will also be starting our project on autumn. We will be looking at seasonal changes, plants and bulbs, trees and using our senses to describe.

Across the school we have been looking at Harvest this week and how it is a time to be thankful. Each class chose a country to investigate and explore how they celebrate Harvest. In Doves class we looked at American and Canadian Thanksgiving and the similarities/differences between this and our Harvest Festival. We explored how apples, potatoes and carrots are grown, harvested and transported to shops and continued our work on plants by looking at the different parts of plants, as well as which part of the plant popular fruits and vegetables come from.
We had extended art time this week, in which we learnt to draw and colour pumpkins. We used different drawing and blending techniques and a range of autumnal colours.
Continuing our work on dragons, we have written a set of instructions this week for 'how to catch a dragon' and in maths we have been working on addition and subtraction number sentences.
Next week we will be continuing our work on castles, describing our own dragons and will be looking at fact families and number bonds in maths. You can practise your number bonds on Hit the Button.

We've had another exciting week in Doves class. We came into school on Tuesday to find that the mysterious egg had hatched and there was burnt paper and ash all over the classroom floor leading to the outside. We then got a letter from the Minister of Dragons to say that there had been sightings of dragons in our area! We decided that it must have been a dragon's egg and thought we should write letters back to let him know everything that has happened. We worked hard on planning and writing our letters and are now eagerly waiting for a reply.
In maths we have been comparing objects and numbers using the signs <, >, = and the vocabulary 'greater than', 'less than' and 'equal to'.
We are now confident at using these maths symbols to compare numbers and have enjoyed watching the snappy alligator video to help remind us: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6Efzu2slaI
Our class book, over the past couple of weeks, has been the story 'The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark' by Jill Tomlinson. We have really enjoyed finding out about Plop, the frightened little barn owl, and making predictions about the ending. Our favourite part of the story was Plop falling off of his branch every time he tried to fly!
In the afternoons, we have learnt about what plants need to grow, planted our own acorns, have written instructions for planting and have spent time planting in the school garden with Mrs Buxton. Next week we will be learning about Harvest.

We have had an exciting week this week, after our settling in time last week, we have started our new topic- Castles and Knights! We found a mysterious egg in the school grounds on Monday and have spent all week looking after the egg in our classroom; we are very excited to see what will happen. In Discovery this week, we have been designing castles using Numicon and counting the windows in tens and ones, we have written about the story Jack and the Beanstalk using 'because' to explain our ideas and have been retelling the story in our small world station.
In Maths we are practising counting in tens and ones using tens frames, part-whole models and Base 10 to help us and in English we have been retelling the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. During our topic lessons we have looked at features of castles and maps of the UK. We have discussed different types of land and where the best place to build a castle would be and why. We took a tour of the school grounds to look at the different areas that we could build a castle and climbed the climbing frame on the playground to understand why castles were built on top of hills. We were surprised at how much further we could see from higher up.
