ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

AND DENBY VILLAGE

History of Denby Free C of E VA Primary School

The school was founded in 1728 by Mrs Jane Massey from Whitemore Hall, Belper.  She overcame many difficulties to have the school built and arranged a trust to ensure its continued use.

The first pupils of the school were at the start of the movement to establish free schooling for everyone.  The Trustees still meet to manage and administer the Trust, which allows the school to be as it is today.  With their generous help the school has recently been altered and decorated and a new classroom has been built.

Denby Free is a primary school catering for children aged four to 11 years.  The original building comprised of three classrooms and a small hall.  Subsequent extensions have provided the offices, staff room, indoor toilets and a kitchen.  The classroom currently occupied by Class S was built in the autumn of 1988.  In 2005 a new classroom, Library and upstairs storage space were added to the back of the school, Class A moved out of their classroom into the bright new classroom.  Their old classroom is now used for ICT lessons, quiet work and it is where pupils eat their sandwiches at lunchtime.  In 2009 the front of the school was completely renovated and extended, upwards, to create fabulous new offices, toilets and a larger staffroom.

The extensive playing field and small hard surface play areas are used as much as possible during breaks, PE lessons and other outdoor activities during and outside school hours.

Our Community

We are very proud to be closely linked with St Mary the Virgin Church which is situated next door to us.  Each Friday the whole school attends church for Collective Worship.  Our pupils and their families come together for special celebrations and services and we have great success with the joint summer fayre held this summer.

We invite you to take a look at the church website which we think you will find colourful and informative.  St Mary the Virgin Church Website.
