It's an exciting week at Denby Free as it's national 'Anti-Bullying Week.' We are always trying to put a positive spin on things, so we are 'Celebrating Differences' all week. There are so many different activities and special things going on around school this week, that I thought that we must record them in this special blog. Check back daily for updates!
The day kicked off with the 'Denby Daily Dilemma.' Isabelle and Neve interrupted each class with noisy instruments to deliver the day's question. Today it was: would you rather have a unicorn's horn or a squirrel's tail? The question promoted much conversation in every class. Answers for the unicorn's horn included:
'It would make me magical.'
'I could fly.'
'I would have magical powers and be able to help all the poor people in the world.'
'I would be special.'
'I would be beautiful.'
'I could poke people with it.'
However my personal favourite was Lucy from Swifts: 'I could stir my tea with it!'
Answers for squirrel's tail included:
'It would enable me to jump from tree to tree.'
'I could use it as a scarf/belt.'
'I would be able to sweep the floor.'
Sparrows were so inspired by the question that they made their own unicorn horns and squirrel's tails, see pictures below!
Each day a member of staff will also be 'different' and the children have to spot who it is! Today it was Mrs Marshall. She was sporting a beautiful hat and sunglasses look. However some children called her 'weird' and 'too informal.' Mrs Marshall was extremely offended!
In collective worship, we learnt of some of the members of staff's differences. The children had to guess which fact belonged to which member of staff. Can you guess who has donated a staggering forty-four pints of blood? Whose favourite film is The Sound of Music? Who was married in the same church that Maid Marian married Robin Hood? Who is Irish? Who is obsessed with football?
Also, each day, collective worship will be topped off with a fabulous performance from a class. Today it was the Owls. Some of the Owl girls performed a dramatic reading of Lady Gaga's 'Hair,' which is all about having the confidence to look different and be who you are. The girls were wearing 'different' hair looks! They were fabulous and made me extremely proud. Well done on a fabulous start to the week everyone!
